Oldest Swinger in Town?

Could Dunkeld and Birnam GC lay claim to the Oldest Regular Golfer in Perthshire or beyond?

John Young, aged 92, regularly plays 18 holes on a Friday in the DABS (Dunkeld and Birnam Seniors), and a Sunday in the Winter League. This can be increased to a 3rd round in the summer on a Wednesday when the need to show youngster, David MacDougall (aged 80), a thing or two, or relieve him of the customary £1 wager.

The discussion started when John was part of a foursome at the recent Gents' Outing to St Michaels, where the foursome total age reached 295!!

Newly appointed Captain, Douglas Ogilvie, at 52 being the "toddler", along with Andy Taylor (71), and David MacDougall made up the group.

Whilst playing the 15th short hole, designated as the "nearest the pin" competition, Douglas, on seeing the hole for the first time, questioned the sanity of the other members suggesting this hole as "ntp"!

A target shot, with the railway at the back of the green, a gully 7 paces short of the pin, and a large pot bunker to the right, required an accurate shot.

Douglas's 5 iron shot, hit the middle of the green, and it was pat on backs as it beat the previous mark and looked a certain winner.

Up steps "young John", and with his driver, floats a perfectly placed shot, deliberate or not, to 15ft of the pin, easily beating all the youngsters.

Congratulations to John for being awarded the "Shot of the Year" trophy at the recent Club Prize-Giving night, and may we wish John many continued happy and healthy golfing years ahead.
