Competition Handicaps

Every so often, we learn something new. So when checking scores in a recent medal, I found that a member who had a handicap of 28, the computer gave the player a maximum of 24 in what was an Extra Medal. There a short discussion as to why this was, but I never realised that members who had an official handicap of 25 - 28, were never allowed to play off more than 24. In January this year, I attended a seminar of the changes to the new handicapping system (which effectively allowed a handicap of up to 54!), and various statistics showed that by allowing a player to use their full handicap allowance, players could take on any other player. Handicaps are there to allow a level playing field. As

Ladies Daily Mail

The Committee have to congratulate our Daily Mail Ladies team of Hilary Cunningham and Anne Walker, who, having battle 6 rounds in this national competition, finally bowed out in round 7 at Cardross Golf Club. The Ladies lost 5 and 3, but were 2 rounds away from representing Dunkeld and Birnam Golf Club at the National finals in Wales. A fantastic achievement for our wee friendly golf club.

Canter - Close Finish for Final 6

A total of 25 players contested for some points in the penultimate round for qualification for selection for to represent the club in the Cowan Cup. Ross MacDonald (146), Stephen Moon (120), are confirmed for selection. A second place in Thursday's Extra Medal saw Steve Gilroy leap (119) into 3rd place, confirming his selection. Also safe, Steven Park (118) is catchable, but confirmed as a top 6. Michael Murray (112), whilst currently in 5th, needs to make sure of some points or home the back markers don't have good scores in the final round to catch him. D D MacDonald (98) is the only "wobbly runner" who could easily find himself dropping out of the top 6, if the next two gain some points c

Canter to the Cowan - Home Straight

With just two Extra Medals to go, and a maximum of 40 points available, the top of the Current Standings looks set to change. There were some big movers over the last week, with Steve Gilroy leaping into the top 6. Ross MacDonald (146) cemented his first position and is guaranteed his invitation to play for the club, whilst Steven Park (118) is also safe from the back markers catching him. With only two rounds left, Stephen Moon (108) looks set to remain in the top 6. Steve Gilroy (103) leaps into the top 6 with a good net 63 this week, and I wouldn't bet on him not being in the team for the Cowan. Michael Murray (102), the only other player over the 100 mark is also in the "dodgy zone" and

Canter Continues

As the Canter reaches the home straight, the race at the top is changing after every Extra Medal. Ross MacDonald (134), and Steven Park (118) continue to be the front runners, and their places seem assured. Stephen Moon (108) has almost guaranteed a place, but another good finish in one of the remaining rounds should see this cemented. D D MacDonald (94) leaps into the top six for the first time after two back to back wins in the last extra medals, and further good round should secure qualification. Andrew Boler (86) and Steve Gilroy (83), are on the sticky wicket, completing the top six. Gary Walker (70), Martin Foster (70, Stuart McKendrick (63), Brian Whyte (62) and Mark Williamson (56) a

Rattray Cup Update

There is a saying " can't please everyone, all of the time..." and having done the SGU Referee's Course, I can add, "...a referee is 95% bored and 5% terrified...". And so you have the Match Secretary's job in a nutshell, when it comes to making decisions. So when the 4th round (best 3 cards of 4), of the Rattray Cup saw some players abandoning their game due to a water-logged course, the buck stops at the Match Secretary for a decision as to what to do next! Initial decision....course closed...round scores count. Competition to be reduced to best 2 scores from 3, and so the email to members is sent. Light the touch paper and step back!!!! Now I won't bore you with the d

Bell Trophy Exit/ Ladies Battle on in Daily Mail

Our Bell Trophy run came to an end on Tuesday when we lost narrowly to Muthill Golf Club 3-2. It was unfortunate that they had a practice round on the previous Sunday, despite the Greenkeeper changing some holes prior to the match. But, Hey Ho!, we did better than the likes of B;airgowrie GC by getting to the Quarter Finals. On a more positive notes, our Daily Mail Ladies have reached the 6th round and are two rounds off getting to the major finals of this event. Good Luck to Anne Walker and Hilary Cunningham in the their next round. Our next match of note is the Inter-Club match which is against Pitlochry Golf Club, to be held on Thursday 14th. We need a team of 12, so anyone interested can

Champions Makes it a Dozen

Congratulations to Stuart McKendrick who makes it his 12th Scratch Club Championship Title, whilst Gwen Lambie makes it 12 in a row for the Ladies Scratch Champion. Sunday 3rd July sees the final round of the Men's Strokeplay Championship. It is unfortunate that there is also a Perth and Kinross Junior Meeting at the same time, and as I write this blog, already there are moans and groans about the pin positions. I dare saw Graham Hutchison has been upset at something this week. Tuesday (5th) sees the Quarter-Finals of the Bell Trophy. with Dunkeld and Birnam GC having a home tie against Muthill Golf Club. I note that they have been to the course for a practice round (Sunday), so I will ensur
